Edgar van Asselt’s Gentle Insult is now fully Immersive.

We are pleased to announce a new phase for Edgar van Asselt’s album The Gentle Insult, as the project is now being released on vinyl LP and CD and has been remixed for the immersive audio formats Dolby Atmos and Auro 3D. Originally issued in 2023 as a digital- and download-focused release, the album moves into this new phase with physical formats and immersive sound. A series of animated videos, each built around the album’s concept, will follow as video singles.

Van Asselt is a Dutch pianist and composer born into a musical family; he began on accordion before moving to piano, later studying at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague within a jazz tradition shaped by Bill Evans and Barry Harris. That grounding runs through The Gentle Insult, a set of nine original compositions that moves between jazz vocabulary, classical nuance, Latin rhythm and pop-oriented hooks, filtered through a touch of absurdism and the use of virtual instruments.

The album features bassist Jeroen Vierdag and drummer Jorge Rossy alongside van Asselt on piano and keyboards, a trio built for the record’s narrative, coloristic writing, which blurs the lines between jazz, Latin, soul and contemporary electronic music without settling into any one of them.

The new Dolby Atmos and Auro 3D mixes are designed to let listeners step inside the album’s layered arrangements rather than simply hear them from the outside, extending a record built on studio detail into a format suited to it. The accompanying series of animated video singles takes the same approach into the visual, drawing out the concept behind each piece as the tracks.

We have followed The Gentle Insult since its original release and think this expanded version does the record justice: physical formats, immersive sound and a companion visual language, all built around music that rewarded close listening the first time around.
