Edgar van Asselt is a Dutch jazz pianist, composer, and producer known for his inventive approach and genre-defying artistry. With a career spanning more than two decades, Edgar has become a prominent figure in the European jazz scene, known for his expressive piano playing, imaginative compositions, and collaborative spirit.

Drawing inspiration from jazz legends such as Bill Evans and Bud Powell, as well as contemporary innovators, Edgar’s music seamlessly blends the rich traditions of jazz with modern grooves, Latin rhythms, and subtle electronic textures. His performances are characterized by lyrical improvisation, rhythmic vitality, and a storytelling quality that invites listeners into a deeply personal musical journey.

 

 

Throughout his career, Edgar has collaborated with a diverse range of internationally acclaimed artists, including saxophonist David Schnitter, Cuban trumpeter Jorge Vistel, drummer Jorge Rossy, vocalist Lucy Woodward, and Brazilian percussionist Robertinho Silva. These collaborations have enriched his sound and expanded his creative horizons, resulting in a unique fusion of styles and influences.

Edgar’s presence has found it’s way to major stages and festivals such as the North Sea Jazz Festival and The Hague International Jazz Days, where his performances have been met with critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences.

Edgar’s discography includes several notable albums that highlight his work as a pianist and collaborator. His latest release is “Song for lost Friends”, featuring the renowned trumpeter Ack van Rooyen. Previous albums include “Major League”, “A Smooth Journey”, and “Penpals”, the latter two featuring collaborations with saxophonist David Schnitter. Edgar van Asselt’s album “The Gentle Insult”, featuring bassist Jeroen Vierdag and drummer Jorge Rossy, was initially released on vinyl in 2023 and will be reissued this autumn with a new remix available for streaming in Dolby Atmos.

 

 

Beyond his work as a performer and composer, Edgar is deeply committed to cultural entrepreneurship and music education. He co-founded World-Town Music, an organization dedicated to fostering music performance, education, and community engagement. Through this platform, he has led groundbreaking projects that bring together artists from diverse backgrounds, facilitating cross-genre residencies and community arts initiatives that resonate beyond the concert hall.
